A New Home

Una nueva casa

Francisco stands outside his new house. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out the key. He turns the key in the lock and opens the door. He steps into the living room and looks around. The paint is peeling off the walls. There is no furniture. The house is dirty and smells bad. He tries to open a window but it is broken. The house does not have a kitchen or a bedroom but there is a microwave on the floor on one side of the room. He wonders if it works. The place looks terrible but it is all he can afford. He covers his nose and mouth with his hand and opens the bathroom door. It is in bad condition.

Francisco está parado afuera de su nueva casa. Él alcanza su bolsillo y saca la llave. Voltea la llave en la cerradura y abre la puerta. Él entra a la sala y mira alrededor. La pintura se está desprendiendo de las paredes. No hay muebles. La casa está sucia y huele mal. Trata de abrir una ventana pero está dañada. La casa no tiene una cocina o un dormitorio, pero hay un microondas en el piso a un lado del cuarto. Él se pregunta si éste funciona. El lugar se ve terrible, pero es todo lo que él se puede permitir comprar. Él se cubre la nariz y la boca con su mano y abre la puerta del baño. ¡Está en muy mala condición!

The team is exhausted. They sit in silence in the locker room, waiting for their coach. It is halftime and they don’t know what to do. They are losing 28 – 0. The coach staggers in. He stinks of smoke and whiskey and his shirt has a big yellow stain on it.  He raises his hand and yells “SILENCE!! I CANNOT UNDERSTAND ANYTHING IF YOU ALL TALK AT THE SAME TIME!!” The players look at each other confused. No one had said anything. “Now, everyone be seated and listen to me. We can still win this game. Just keep defending and… you know… scoring. That’s the beauty of basketball. A twenty-eight point lead is NOTHING!! Now… if you gentlemen will excuse me…” He walks over to the restroom, goes in and shuts the door. The players hear a loud thud and assume that he has passed out. No one says a word. They look at their captain. He stands up and speaks to the team. “Well…we should have mentioned that we were playing soccer and not basketball… but I guess it’s too late now. So, what can I say? Let’s go out there and do our best to limit the humiliation. Okay?”

El equipo está agotado. Ellos se sientan en silencio en el vestidor, esperando a su entrenador. Es el medio tiempo y no saben qué hacer. Están perdiendo 28 – 0. El entrenador entra tambaleándose. Él apesta a humo y whisky y su camisa tiene una gran mancha amarilla. Levanta la mano y grita "¡SILENCIO! ¡NO PUEDO ENTENDER NADA SI TODOS USTEDES HABLAN AL MISMO TIEMPO!” Los jugadores se miran confundidos. Nadie había dicho nada. "Ahora, todos siéntense y escúchenme. Todavía podemos ganar este partido. Sólo sigan defendiéndose y… ustedes saben…  sigan anotando. Eso es lo bonito del baloncesto. ¡Una ventaja de veintiocho puntos es NADA! Ahora... si ustedes caballeros me disculpan..." Él camina hacia el baño, entra y cierra la puerta. Los jugadores escuchan un ruido sordo y asumen que se ha desmayado. Nadie dice una palabra. Ellos miran a su capitán. Él se levanta y se dirige al equipo. "Bueno... deberíamos haber mencionado que estábamos jugando fútbol y no baloncesto... pero supongo que ahora es demasiado tarde. Así que, ¿qué puedo decir? Salgamos y hagamos nuestro mejor esfuerzo por limitar la humillación. ¿De acuerdo?"

The Windy City

Chicago, where I am from, is called the "Windy City."  In the winter a cold wind blows off Lake Michigan and it snows a lot.  The temperature gets very cold, sometimes below zero.  

In the spring the weather is great.  It's warm and the snow melts.  People plant gardens and start to play outdoor sports like baseball.

In the summer it's hot and sometimes humid.  People swim and turn on their air conditioners to keep cool.  Sometimes it rains or we get thunderstorms.  

In the fall it's cool.  People prepare for winter and buy warm clothes like coats and hats.  The leaves change colors and fall from the trees.  It's very beautiful.
